We also had our first ones yesterday - Vales Emerald - they were GORGEOUS! Planted them 11 weeks ago and foliage just starting to turn yellow. I thought they'd need a couple more weeks but there were loads. And I've got another 11 rows of different types. Still haven't planted my Pink Fir which were a v. last minute buy. I'm going to have to dot them around wherever I've got space and put some in pots. I know it's very late - but I think they'll be OK. We seem to have a long growing season here!

I just lifted one bag of Winston tonight. I planted one potato in a bag with 17litres of compost and I got 4lbs 6oz of potatoes. Result I would say. I wanted them for showing but they are far too big. Biggest one was 10.6oz.

Every day I pass fields that were planted with potatoes and 2 or 3 fields full are now just brown twigs. Do you think blight has hit or have they just gone over and are waiting to be lifted?

It's a bit early for blight up here but I don't know about your neck of the woods. So far we've harvested 22 lbs of new spuds...I really feel sorry for those people who's only experience of the potato is something in a plastic bag from a supermarket.

SMS6 it sounds like they have been killed off in preperation for harvesting.

I lifted 2 plants of Lady Christl on the end of a row (needed the space to put out the leek plants which were too cramped in their tray) and we had potatoes, salad and steak (everything home grown except toms which weren't ripe yet and the steak obviously - not allowed to keep cattle at the lottie!). Sooo good!
