  • First ever....

Just thought it would be nice to have the chance to celebrate any successes in either a new veg or new variety grown/ harvested. I also thought it might inspire us to also try something new. As you have probably guessed this was prompted by my first ever harvest of asparagus, Stewarts purple and my first rhubarb stalks, Fulton's Strawberry Surprise. What are your first evers?

I've just sown my first ever cucumbers - a variety called vega which produces small fruits (I can never use a whole shop bought one before it goes off).

My garden is full of "first ever's", that's half the motvation for my scheme this year Aside from what's ahead, the only real "first" I've had this year is blossom on my cherry tree

This year is so full of firsts for me - my first time growing raspberries, cherries, redcurrants, swiss chard, perpetual spinach, beetroot, small carrots, onions, leeks, aubergines... And probably some more! It's wonderful to finally have a suitable garden space and a greenhouse to experiment with.

First ever week for me - first ever frog in our pond and first ever freshly laid eggs from our new chickens First ever rhubarb harvest and first ever perpetual spinach yay!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

Found a piece of sprouting ginger at the farm shop.I have planted each section with a sprout.Seems to be doing well if rather slowly. Also trying watercress for the first time .Again rather slow but it has germinated .Ithink it is a watch pot never boils, but I will be patient!

                .

You can't beat the taste of a freshly laid egg from your own chickens/ducks

This is the first year I've started things off in cell trays indoors, which has meant I can sow things I want rather than rrelying on finding things at plant sales (which I'm sure I will continue to do!). This is the first year I've sown artichokes and aubergines, though I did manage to birth two small aubergines from a plant I bought last year. I was particularly pleased with those as not only do I adore aubergines but I don't have a greenhouse, so it just had to take its chances out in the open.

This is the first year I've warmed ground before planting (for parsnips), and it will be the first year I really properly prepare the ground for the squashes (pumpkin, courgette and cuc) with home-made compost.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

It was great and very tasty to have my "1st" asparagus crop, after waiting 3 years grown from seed!!!
