I have never had much luck with onion seeds but I do plant sets, the Japanese ones are usually planted in the Autumn - I plant mine in September so it could well be a little late although its worth a try, you haven't got much to lose!

Like Scarlet says: bung em in, you've nowt to lose.

My japanese ones went in last October and made a few inches of green growth before shutting down for the winter. This gives them a head start when things warm up in spring and you can expect a crop much earlier than with spring planted ones. Yours will just be late but they should still produce something.

Hi Blue, reading your thread it sounds as if they are sets you are talking about. I have a bag I haven't planted yet. I dug over a bit of ground yesterday, put some cardboard and fleece over the ground to warm it up a bit and will lift the cardboard at the weekend and plant mine. Better late than never. If its seeds you were on about I sowed some onion and shallot seed yesterday.
