  • Firepits/Chimenea - My DIY effort

This is probably not the right place but I thought I would post it anyway.

I have been spending a lot more time out in the garden lately but because of work and putting my son to bed I don't get out there till after 7 most evenings. Although the weather has been mild lately it still gets a bit parky as the evening goes on.

A few years ago I got a little terracotta chimenea from B&Q but it just fell apart as it didn't survive the winter.

Not wanting to spend any money on a new one I made this*:

Except I used a galvanised bolt for the door handle.

It was pretty simple in the end. Took two weeks as I had to vent the gas and then leave it filled with water for a week to make sure it was completely safe to drill into the bottle.

I used an old fire extuingusher for the chimney, I got the hinge from my neighbours old garden gate. so the only cost was for metal jigsaw blades and a can of BBQ paint. My welding is not the best on this one but it will do as I can't be arsed to fix the welder.

I fired up the finished one last night and it gets really hot and gives off a lot of heat. It's perfect plus everyone who sees it wants me to make them one.
So any of you made a firepit/chimnea out of old scrap?

    Well Impressed .
You could make a mint on those. A very good imagination.

That looks really good. And, as one who used to get paid actual money to weld, that top weld looks pretty neat.

Just one suggestion. Shouldn't it have holes in the door to let the air flow through?

Apart from that, get your tools out and get selling 'em on Ebay

I just leave the door open for airflow, it seems to work OK.

You can't see the welds on the back. they are rubbish. I have covered the welds in fire cement to cover all the gaps.

There are loads on ebay already. These gas bottle burners have become very popular over the past few years. They go for about £70.

To be honest I am probably going to sell this one on as I have another bottle I want to use as it's a better shape (it's a bottle used for Helium and it's more "pot bellied").

But although it's pretty easy to make it's also time consuming and I am not that great a welder.

They are easy enough to do.

                    Here's some instructions:

                    Gas Bottle Wood Burner

Search in google and you will find loads of sites with info. There are a couple of guides on youtube as well.

The welding is the only technical bit, and you could probably get away with just using some sort of bracket.

Thats brilliant mate, very impressed indeed.

Funny you should start this thread I have recently been looking into making a pizza oven on my allotment plot. They are really attractive pieces to have in your garden and I think it will be a rewarding and fun project. Need to purchase the fire bricks though.

I just think of a summers evening with family and friends around cooking a lovely meal with fresh Veg etc from the allotment and then eating it amongst the birds and the bees would be very enjoyable.

I hope I can find the time to do make it this year.

Is anyone else thinking of building one of these?

At the mo I'm converting an old roofless garage at the bottom of the garden into a secret walled patio/BBQ/Med garden - it would look fantastic there.

Maybe I should show OH this thread, but failing that (which it probably will) - when I put in my order

                              Absolutely Fantastic!!

You should be well pleased with yourself Stuie! I'd be chuffed to bits if it were me.

I think it looks great, and OH is very impressed too.

A lot of those chimneas have some very dodgy looking stands, but yours looks very stable indeed. Can you make it a fireguard to keep little hands off the hot metal or is your wee lad old enough to understand?
