  • a few veggie questions!!!!

    Hi all,

    Please see pics,

I have not grown lettuce before, or radish.

Are they ready to harvest do you think? As they look it to me?

I wish to pull the lettuce whole.

Also, does my garlic look ok? As the outer leaves are sort of yellowing a bit. But inner leaves are green and strong and look healthy.

Also, what is that in the middle of the spinach? A flower bud?

    Thank you all

They all look fine to me CG. You can cut your lettuce whenever its big enough to eat. If you wait until they're all huge, you'll be eating lettuce 3 times a day to eat them up. Best to stagger them. Also, if you cut them off, leaving a small stump and the roots in the tub, more leaves will sprout from the stump. Cut a small X on the top of the stump and you'll grow 4 mini lettuces
The spinach is starting to bolt - nip out the flower now and use this spinach first.

hi vc, that is good information about the lettece stump. I will do as you suggest.

The main stem is about an inch at the base.

I will pull 2 soon I think, as they are fairly big now!

And I will nip that flower off the spinacj in in a minute!

The radish is french breakfast and around 1 1/2 inches long, ready to pull do you think?

I never have much luck with radish because I leave them too long and they go woody. Yours look just right!!

Radish look ideal. If you let them get too big they go woody and are not nice at all. I pulled some last week.

              When did you sow these?

I am jealous, I'm only really growing things now and wish I had stuff to harvest other than herbs haha.

Wish I had planted some of these, especially the lettuce, my two rabbits would love it!

Leave a few radish though! They'll bolt, leave them, then, they'll grow these little pointy pip things, seed heads. My kids ate bowls of these last summer and prefered them to the radishes! Mine were french breakfast too. They're just an extra veg you get for free
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

I sowed the lettuce on February 24th in the cold greenhouse.

Needless to say they grew very slowly to begin with.

Garlic was sown last November, also inside cold greenhouse

Radish were sown around 5 weeks ago

But now, I have a nice early harvest. so, for a first attempt I am very pleased.

I sowed some more last week!

                    Can also be curried!

Granny hobbit used to curry them when I was younger. Came from bolted moolis. And apparently, can be eaten with beer.

I'm not a big radish fan but after trying a home grown one last week with my homegrown rocket they are actually quite tasty! Try them fresh!

If you're giving them to your Mum, pull them just before you see her - they'll stay crisper that way
