  • Fence paint on borders

Hi all, on my allotment I've inherited wooden squares which are good for bordering plants but aren't used as raised beds. They are useful as I've been attaching netting to the tops of them to keep the birds off.

Anyway they have seen better days and I want to try and lengthen their life by painting them with wood stain. I brought the 5litre tub of fence paint from Homebase today for £4.27. I was well happy with the price but since buying it a little nagging feeling has come over me about whether its packed full of evil chemicals, especially as I'm trying to be 100% Organic.

Have any of you painted your raised beds? Did it concern you or is fence paint safer these days? I know the EU banned Creosote and would have probably banned similar bad products? I did try searching for topics on it before but none came up.

    Thank you

Check on the container if it's water based it will be OK, otherwise ingredients should be listed, most are OK now.

I stained mine to protect them... but I only stained the outside and the inside is lined so the painted part aren't really in contact with the soil at all. As potty said, have a look at the ingredients and goooooogle to see if there's anything you'd prefer to avoid
