    Favourite plant

    My mates think I am a geek as it is with my plots and all.

    BUT

    Whats your favorite plant and why ?

    Mine this year is a tomato plant that has (I guess) grown from a seed of a tomato that fell off my plants last year.

    I have no idea how it got in there, but in a crack between the paving flags in my greenhouse a tomato plant has grown.

    I very nearly pulled it up, but realised what it was and have nurtured it - and its now about 5ft tall and starting to produce flowers.

    I will take some pictures later and post them, its natures little miracle.

    I have one every year, and last years for the record was a Cheyenne chili plant that was one of three I grew from seed. All potted on at the same time and into the same pots/same watering and feeding schedule. this one ended up huge, three or four times the size of the other two and produced 363 fruits all in.

      My favourite this year is the thug of a pumpkin that I am growing for my little boy - especially considering the circumstances of it's cultivation:

      It started like this:

      Subsequently it has moved on about another 10ft and laid a big fruit that is swelling at a fair pace. It has also captured my son's imagination - he has to check on it in the morning and in the evening!
      While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

        My favourite one this year is my Athena Polka courgette plant........It's massive and so productive...Picked 4 off yesterday evening..There are courgettes shooting from everywhere!!
        I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

          I have 2 favourites this year and I can't decide between them They both make me smile whenever I see them
          One is Trombe d'Albenga and the other - Dragon's Egg cucumbers!!


          Edit - Just noticed that winged insect on the Dragon's Egg - wonder what it was?

            Not sure I have a favourite, but the plant which is making me laugh at the moment is my single uchiki kuri squash. Whenever I strain the comfrey tea, I throw the yukky leftovers around it, and it seems to be thriving on this diet. Before I cut the ends off it had reached around 12 feet in several directions, and just refused to be trained with sticks. So it's clambered up and over a mini tunnel, as well as trying to escape into the neighbours plot.
            There's at least ten fruit, most of which have grown to full size and are just beginning to turn orangey. To be honest I'll be sorry when the plant is over, it almost feels like it has a personality.

              Mine is pattison squash. Looks very pretty and keeps on producing more and more. Love them, will be growing even more next year so could share with neighbours.

                It used to be grandma Hungarian Black chilli. She did three seasons, but sadly died over the winter.

                  This year I'm delighted with my runner beans as the flowers are so productive, everyone in the family loves them, they're nice raw and cooked, I can make chutney with them and the children get so excited about going out to pick.

                  I'm really pleased with lots this year - courgettes, tomatoes, Little Gems, beetroot - but the RBs have it.
                  Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                      My vigorous apple tree. I cut off a fair-sized branch every year, so that it doesn't get too humongous. That's all the attention it gets. Produces about 1000 apples a year. I don't understand why not more gardeners have them. For commercial growers I can see that waiting 10-15 years for fruit would be a big handicap, but the low input high output makes it ideal if you don't have to make a living off it.

                        Borage.

                        I had never grown it before, but it is probably my favourite plant this year, as it is a) very pretty, b) very very tasty, and c) it has brought loads of bees into my gardening. There are around 8 or 9 plants dotted around the garden and they are constantly being attended by the bees
                        Quanti canicula ille in fenestra ?

                          The pictures as promised of the miracle tomato plant that's managed to grow from between a crack in the paving flags in my greenhouse from a fallen fruit from last years crop.

                          The first shows the stem emerging from the crack.

                          Second shows the plant in all it's glory.

                          Third and final shows a couple of trusses.

                          Proud moment to see my child come through this much adversary !

                            Certainly hard to beat this tomato plant. It just shows that if the conditions are right its gonna grow no matter what. Without any outside help.

                            But I would like to add to my favourite this year physalis, tolerates cold in spring, no watering at all, and the plants are looking healthy and producing well right now.the one in the polytunnel is as tall as me but not a single fruit yet.
