The second batch of peas aren't doing so well so wondering where everything has gone wrong this time (bah)

    Thanks folks

Bean seeds rot very easy if they are too wet, a lesson I learnt last year :-( Do you have more seeds can you resow?

Soak them in the water overnight and like Jill says, don't overwater the pots as they rot. It's hard to believe but they are more difficult to germinate than tomatoes

I'm just starting some of mine today. Some are soaked and the compost won't be watered till it's dusty-dry and some aren't soaked and the compost is watered. I don't usually have problems with beans though.

I have the same variety and mine hadnt germinated at all, so yesterday I decided to cheat and try the heated propagator and today there is an eruption in the soil. I have no idea if this is a good or bad idea but if nothing else it has got things moving....

thanks all, I've got some more spare of blue lake (but not a lot of the others) hence trying the early batch with them.

I always have a problem with peas and beans but have no problems germinating anything else, including parsnips seeds 2 years old!!!

I found last year that white bean seeds don't sprout if you soak/chit them. They just rot. Weird huh?

This year, I've soaked my Sungold, and they chitted just fine (also white beans).

I sowed my french beans a week or so ago, two gutters of cherokee trail of tears, one lot that I saved myself the year before last and they have all germinated fine. I don't soak them or sow them very deep - you can almost see them under the compost, but I dampen the compost at the time.

They hate wet compost. Make sure it is just moist, and warm.

This happened to me last year. I think I killed them with kindness as I was just too worried about them drying out. This years been better touch wood and my cherokee trail of tear, serbian pole, tiger pole and yin-yang (all courtesy of the wonderful TwoSheds!) are all up and eagerly growing out of their pots. Don't give up.

I germinate mine first on damp kitchen paper, so you can see which ones sprout, works really well.

I never soak my French, runner or broad beans and never have any problem with them germinating, all mine are coming on fine without any heating at all tho it is very hot here during the day which seems to suit them fine - they go into the seed house thingy at night or the cold frame which is south facing and sheltered by the house.

I never soak mine either, just put them into moist soil in root trainers and they come up a treat.
