  • F1 Tomato info

I wonder if anyone has a link for information on F1 tomatoes, what I am looking for is for info about parent plants...for example.

2 varieties made the famous F1 Sungold cherry tom, where would I find out that info? Or is it a trade secret?

The same answer as on the F2 thread; if you read Flum's blog, it will tell you everything you need to know. Flum has saved the babies of F1 Sungold and is growing them out to find a stable sungold strain.

Its due to the F2 topic AND Flums blog that I'm asking this question, clearly neither answer my question as far as I can see. Have I missed a part somewhere that lists all F1 varieties and the parent plants that made them?

I think they keep that a secret!

Photo, that's a trade secret I'm afraid. Perhaps you could try an experiment yourself if your interested in that kind of thing.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

"Some sources mentioned that Brandywine may be one of the parents for this hybrid, but it is not known for sure.
Some tomato growers, who grew F2 generation of Sungold, also reported a few potato leaf seedlings"

I would imagine somewhere in cyber land or google there must be a similar tomato page?

The reason you can't find out the parentage of F1 tomatoes is so that you can't make the cross yourself and you have to keep buying them! As you say, it's a trade secret. If they told us, we'd do it instead of paying £2.99 for 8 seeds!

                        G'Day Guys!

Don't assume that every hybrid that lands on the market is an F1, even if they label it as an F1 on the seed packet. Some hybrids, by the time they have come onto the market, have been 'back-crossed' so many times to 'intensify' the characteristics that the breeders are looking for, that it can happen that a hybrid when released could have input from as many as six to eight varieties.

Nonetheless, whenever I grow out a hybrid that I am impressed with I will henceforth save seeds, with the intent of growing them again. If we persist we can end up with new stable, open pollenated varieties. And, they don't have to be identical to the original hybrid we started out with. If they have great flavour, texture, shape and size I'll keep growing them - even if we end up with magenta with indigo stripes! It's all part of the fun!

Happiness is being with the love of your life. If you can't have that, then an unlimited supply of well-rotted manure is a pretty close second!
