  • An experiment

I know majority of people prefer soil, but I like playing and trying new things. Something I stumbled across in Aus was the concept of aquaponics. Hydroponics blended with aqua-culture.

I thought I'd document my experiment so I could have fun and at the end possibly get a load of I told ya so's.

Well here goes the start of it

The concept basically is you feed the fish in the pond. The fish poo, which feeds the plants and the plants remove the nitrites and nitrates and put cleaner water back for the fish.

You eat the veg and the fish. So basically getting your meat and veg from a system where your only cost is the fish food.

Now, I do not eat fish so have opted for goldfish.

I've recently seen a documentary about an 'eco house' where they practise aquaponics .... the fish they breed are talapia, and they re-circulate the water to irrigate the veg (most were salad greens)

they also have the Bokashi composting bins and recycle as much as they can ....

I cannot find that video, but here is another one I bookmarked:

So what do you grow in winter when it's too cold for most veg, to keep the water clean for the fish? Or is that when you're supposed to eat the fish?

      Endless wonder.

Gonna try and tent it and grow chard over winter finances dependant. We wanted the fish as a pond anyhows.

In theory you replace/fish breed in spring....
