  • Elephant Garlic not growing

I planned to grow some elephant garlic in the ground.
I put the cloves in pots outside to get them started but nothing has happened.
I emptied out the pots to have a look at them. The cloves look fine but no sign of growth after about 2 months.
Any ideas ? Should I bring them inddors ?

    How strange!
Maybe it's just a bit too cold for the roots to get established???

Either you could leave them- or take them up if there are NO roots and put them in the fridge for a few days - and then place them onto about an inch of potting compost in a seed tray and leave them somewhere warmish.

Did the frost get to them? If so forget about the fridge bit.
You could just be being impatient

I grew some a few years ago- and planted them in the Spring - and as they weren't frosted they didn't split.

They've been out in the frost Nicos.
They haven't done anything, no roots. They just look the same as when they went in.
My other garlic is doing great.

        Hmmm?

Did you buy them from a Garlic specialist? Could you ask their advice?

I planted some Elephant Garlic and some Solent Wight Garlic about a month ago, lots happening with the Solent, nothing from the Elephant yet. I'm hoping it takes longer due to the size
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over
          here, looking through your stuff.

mine took a few weeks to show any shoots,i planted them the same day as shallots, and shallots are well away,it's my first year and was lucky enough to have some given, but the 3 i got in a packet from a well known garden centre, are doing nothing, not even a sign of a root, never mind a shoot, and at almost £1 each is dissapointing, after reading the instructions and noticing the difference between the shop ones and my gifts, there is no comparison, they look totaly different, think they coated with comething, maybe they are slower this time of year,i will make sure i get them in the ground in the autumn,

I planted some elephant garlic out in pots last autumn & they did absolutely nothing until a few weeks ago & now they have some nice leaf growth, looks a bit like tulips coming up (hope I didn't get them mixed up!) so I think they are just slow to get going.

same as Sue, it took them a long time to get going, and they're still slow in comparison with the normal garlic.

Thank you eveybody. Looks like they're just slow starters. I feel a bit more optimistic about them and I'll just have to be patient.

Mine were the same. planted them late Oct / early Nov last year and they did not come up for ages. I think it was early March, but might have been a bit earlier or later not 100% sure. They are now enormous and look very strong! Good thick stems, much bigger than the normal garlic.

Thank you Demeter. That gives me comfort. Hopefully they will appear.
