  • elephant garlic from bulbils

had quite a good result last year from my elephant garlic, swmbo loves it as its easier to peel, and i'm a big fan as the bulbs grow nice and big with minimal effort.
the cost of seed garlic is prohibitive however at around a pound a clove so I kept back about a third of my crop for replanting this year.So far so good .they went in in november and are now about 8 inches high.
when harvesting last years crop I also had 50-60 bulbils and was told if I planted these I would get full size bulbs in 1-2 years.so far no show so today had a bit of a furtle,of the 10 or so I actually found none are shooting and all appear dead ,like empty nutshells filled with clear jelly like snot.any idea what went wrong .they are in the same bed as the saved cloves.
don't be afraid to innovate and try new things
remember.........only the dead fish go with the flow

I have looked into this myself, you apparently have to plant them up right away,as they dry out on the root area, this i tried last year, only 1 out of a good 100 had a little green shoot,i planted them up within a few mins of digging out,had the trays of compost all ready, that 1 has now gone,i have tried the last 3 years without success, and will continue,i hate being defeated,i tried several ways, plant in the autumn, putting into water to keep them from drying out,and planted straight away, even gave some bottoms a bit of rough,to try break the hard outer coating,i still live in hope, not that i really need any more bulbs,i like the challenge,
sigpicAnother nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

Same problem here! I've tried, soaking in water and planting out in Oct, some straight in the ground and some in pots outside. Last year I replanted them straight away. Nothing has appeared. I'm not going to bother again.

This is my first winter growing hard neck garlic, the B&Q one, 3 bulbs for 1,99GBP. If everything goes well, I will buy some elephant garlic next time. Please, keep us posted of how your elephant garlic is doing and any tips, etc. would be gratefully appreciated!
