  • The effects of growing on in sowing compost?

I'm just wondering what effects would a plant suffer/show if you kept potting on in sowing/cutting compost instead of mpc?

I might try this next year if no one really knows!

Any feed back would be good

Seed compost has virtually no nutrients, so plants would suffer unless you mixed in some granulated fertiliser of some sort. Osmo do an all round organic balanced fertiliser that would do the job. You'd probably have to water more regularly as well because the seed stuff tends to have more sand in it...

      Exactly that.

A seed, like an egg, has all the nutrient it needs to germinate/hatch, but when it's a youngster reaching up in the world, it's gonna need feeding

Seed compost is normally more expensive than MPC too.

After a few years, you might decide you don't need seed compost at all. Most of us, I'd say, don't buy it

I never buy seed compost, just use MCP.

If I use seed compost, I fill half the seed tray with MPC and only put seed compost where the seed is going to be...so that once the root starts to grow down it can get nutrients from below the seed compost.

Otherwise it runs out of nutrients pretty fast and starts to go slightly pale or yellow.

Where I have used seed compost in a whole tray, I sieve and reuse it.

If you fed the compost with liquid feed would it help? Also I have a load of botles of liquid gromore that someone gave me. Is it worth using it as I haven't before? Will it add nutrients to the soil or just wash away in rain/watering? (My soil is rubbish as had the topsoil removed)
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

What physical signs if any would the plant show ie leaf curl, yellowing, wilting etc.....

I made this mistake with some garlic I set way in modules. Just chucked the plants out tonight as they were at deaths door even though I watered and fed them.

Lesson learned............I will stay clear of seed compost in future!

Oh no, I bought seed compost for the first time this year, never usually bother, just realised that I've potted my tomatoes up with it Will they be ok if I give them liquid feed or should I repot them?

How long ago did you pot them, and into what size pots?

                              I'd repot them personally.
