    Easy veg to grow

    Hi

    As Im a beginer on newly cleared plot I want to plant some veg that is not to complicated / hard to look after and will give me decent results.


    Thinking of potatoes (been told these will help break up the soil as well as give me a crop)
    Beetroot (love it and the leaves in salads)
    Rainbow Chard (Easy to grow, like it)
    Perpeptual spinich (mainly for chicken feed but we will have it if nice)
    Borage (read its a great animal feed and good for composting)

    I wouldnt mind some cut and come again salad leaves any suggestions ?

    Any other ideas veg wise?

    I am also going to attempt to grow scarlet runner beans / blue lake climbing french beans up the sides of my 6 foot high chicken run fence to food and to help shade shelter the hens

    I have 3 12' x 4' beds but have space for more if needed and more to the point, if I have the time!!!!!

    Sweetcorn is easy to grow, also bush tomatoes very easy.

      Lemon balm (proper name herb melissa) is easy to grow and great for chicken runs.
      chuck armfuls of it into the run and it releases citronella scent as they scratch about, deterring flies.

      Kales are good, for us and for the hens.

      Raspberries are easy and delicious, also redcurrants....both appreciated by hens and humans.

        Forgot to mention - we are on a hill and very exposed with no cover from the fierce prevailing westerly winds in the North East of England (not until my wilow hedge grows a bit) so I think sweetcorn is out.

        I have aready put in 12 rasps, 9 blackcurrants, 3 redcurrants, 2 gooseberries and planted apples , pears, cherries, greengage last year but only got a few apples last year

          Rhubarb is hardy.
          When you pick the stems, leave the up turned leaves on the ground, then in the morning pick off the slugs which will be hiding underneath and give to the chooks for a treat!

          Courgette, marrows, pumpkins etc when large can be cut up and given to the chooks, and are dead easy to grow.

            I was just about to say beans. I did Scarlet runner beans the other year and they did really well. How about onions. They have so many uses from pickling to salads plus leeks are handy over the winter period.

              For cut and come again I can't beat red and green salad bowl love it, cut the outside leaves and it will keep growing, plant slightly closer together with cutting, also my ladies love lettuce, especially when it has bolted and they can eat all the flowers.

              Heard lambs lettuce will grow like a weed and you have tonnes and it will re-seed and come back.

              My ladies especially love anything from the brassica family, if you grow a cabbage and you don't need the space again straight away, just cut at ground level and the stump will keep producing great to throw in those extra leaves to them, and I never watered once cut the part I wanted.
              I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

                When we had the girls they loved chinese cabbage - easy and quick to grow and nice for both you and the girls. It is also really cold tolerant - but it normally bolts in the summer so sow it for early summer or autumn use.

                  Be careful of the raspberries they will spread and take over if they can.
                  Almost suggest you try anything you can, looking at our local market they had a fair selection of young veg in at good prices and most of the growing "pots" had 4/5/6 small veg in. If you bought 6 units of parsnip I guess you got close to 25-30 actual plants.

                    For cut and come again I can't beat Lollo Rossa which is a curly leaved red lettuce. I find it is less attractive to slugs for some reason than most lettuces.

                      Would be fine in. trimdon if you can shelter it. Only need shelter in July - Sep. I have grown them in an exposed plot in a raised bed with some cane frames as support.

                      Purple Sprouting does well up here.

                      Leeks, Onions?

                      Squash family good for ground cover

                        Little gems are easy, satisfying and delicious. Great grilled whole as well! 3 inch rows of kale to be used small as cut and come again give great return for effort involved.
                        No matter:the allotment is lovely, the tadpoles have legs, my sea kale has germinated and I am glad to be home.
