  • early veg growing

    Hi

I have never grown early veg and have carrots and peas but don't know if they need protection. I have not sown them yet and am worried they won't work as its still cold and frosty at times. I love peas so it would be great to plant some so Ican get an earlier harvest. I have no cloche but have a fleece if that helps

    many thanks!

    Hi Sarah

Can you pop where you are into your profile, as it really will depend on where you are as to the best advice.

It will also depend on the variety - I have early onward and kelvedon wonder outdoors already and early onwards have just germinated outdoors under a grow house.

I am thinking of planting twinkle (what a lovely name).

Peas can be started of now in pots and then transplanted once they have germinated. I started some off about 4 weeks ago and put them out on the lottie last weekend. Once germinated any of the early varieties will withstand the snow and cold but wont like winds. Carrots can be planted in deep pots now but will not like being transplanted, Once again once they have germinated they wont mind the cold. I have 5 pots (6" dia by 9to10" deep) all germinated but they will stay in the pots till ready to eat. Good luck with your planting Saraheliz.

I've planted some pots of carrots today and put them in the coldframe - but I think they would be allright even without it.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

            Hi gojiberry and Alice

many thanks for your help. I have planted some peas in pots so will feel better now planting them outside. I sowed carrots outside today as I had read they didn't like transplanting but will also put some in a pot as well. thank you!
