Do you really need to grow the seeds 5 cm deep?

I usually stick my finger down to the first knuckle and dib them in. The seeds are only small when compared to broad or runner beans so it's just a rule of thumb (pardon the pun) as the bigger the seed is the deeper it needs to be planted.I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well! -
I usually start them off in a sealed plastic bag with damp compost . When you can see strong shoots through the bag I then plant out
I don't seem to lose as many seeds this way.Comment
