Drying onions

I leave mine attached at the roots until the tops start to go brittle, then fork them up, take em home and lay then in the coldframe with the top open just enough to allow air to circulate but keep the rain out.
After a couple of weeks i take em in the greenhouse and string the best up for winter use.. the small ones goes to my mate for pickling and any damaged goes to my sister for chutney.

I have mine laying out on slatted tops in the poly and GH. Wouldn't risk trying to dry them outsid, not with the rain here.

Wayne, can you get them on a mesh or similar and under partial cover? that way you will let the air around them and give them a better chance of drying off. I just hauled my ow onions out today and left them lying as we have unforecasted sunshine. yay.

I always dry mine off inside, wait until the tops have fallen over and then bring them in. Mine are still outside and are likely to stay so this weekend as I'm not harvesting them in the rain

. Bring yours in and they should be OK.

Reckon they'll be alright to store?

we are in the same position,lifted mine 3 weeks ago and it just keeps raining,had a couple of months rain last night,rained for last 36hrs, and will continue til sat/sunday,we can tell summer is here,the rain has got warmer..

Started to take up my shallots Monday lovely day, thought well at least i will get the Onions up too!!
Well ever been had, the wet stuff decided to pay a visit and is still here!!!! Oh well, whats the saying

I usually have to lift my onions early due to infected soil (not whiterot) that causes the bulbs to rot. So have had mine in store for several weeks now.

I laid mine out on a tray in the gh

I completely forgot they were there though, and have been watering them twice a day for several weeks
