  • Down day today

Didn't get a chance to get down to plot last week and on going today after rain and sunshine I can't tell the seedlings from the weeds. Think I've now pulled out half my seedligs and need to start alot of things again. Second set of beans haven't come up but still don't have enough room for my leggy seedlings at home as my lottie partner friend has covered half of our 1/2plot with potatoes. Sorry, very fed up today. Oh well at least the bh weekend will be nice enough to try to sort it all out. Sorry, not really a useful thread either and probably in the wrong place

at least you still have 2 more days to try and sort. Sorry you're feeling down. Plentyof time to start beans..... germinate them at home where you can keep an eye on them

Thanks redthorn. Think I'll have to buy more beans as these just don't want to germinate and I couldn't possibly buy shop runners to eat!

Coudn't you just let your seedlings grow through the weeds and then do your weeding when your plants are easier to identify?

I would let everything grow until you can recognise them and tell your lottie partner that you want a word about planting plans. chin up

Thanks everyone. Was considering letting the weeds grow on but the clipboards on the plot may start complaining particularly as the plots are now so oversubscribed that they are now closing the waiting lists. On a more cheerful note, the cima di rape that I sowed last autumn and didn't think would come up went mad and I've caught it just befor it flowered and had it for dinner.

What does it taste like? I got the free seeds with the mag, but as space is limited I'm unsure whether to sow this in case it tastes too turnipy (yuck)

                        Hi Maximillian.

Can you get some modules and compost and start things off in those - I use a pallet at the lottie and have trays of just started seedlings ready to pop in....then you know what is a seedling and what is a weed [as you don't plant it until it is big enough]. It saves so much in lost seeds it really is an investment.

They are a little like greens and brocolli, slightly bitter (in a good way). I blanch them for a couple of minutes then cookthem for five minutes in olive oil garlic chill and a little salt. You can eat them warm or cold with antipasti.

I think Zazen's idea is one to go for - you'll know the seedlings and they'll go in to a cleared bed, before the weeds start back.

Amazing though, isn't it, no matter what the weather, weeds thrive.
