I don't think it would have been butterfly netting over the hoops though

Butterflies don't trouble carrots, but Carrot Fly does, and you would need either fleece, or Insect/Enviro mesh to keep them out as they are very small.

My carot 'cage' is just stakes knocked into the soil along the edge of my bed topped with thin wire (rope would do) stapled to the top of each stake and enviromesh type fabric stretched over the top.

I use upvc small bore drainage tube and jointing angles - very cheap from B & Q. It can then be covered with net, enviromesh, fleece, polythene - whatever. Keeps everything out.

Yes very nice plots, im jealous! Going to have to build something like this as i love carrots and dont want the little blighters getting them!

If it was on Gardeners' World you might have seen Toby Buckland building his version of Geoff Hamilton's cloche. You can cover it with fleece, enviromesh or polythene depending which job you want it to do. Here's a link to how to build the cloche.
