  • Does anyone know - Butternuts.

I saved some seed from a Butternut squash that I bought last year. Sowed it just to see what happened. Result, three plants one didn't come to anything but the other two are producing squash. It was obviously a F1 that I had saved the seed from. One is producing proper shaped Butternuts but the other one is producing just short fat fruit.

Anyone got any idea what the other one might be and is it edible?

I will buy proper seed next year!!!!!

It's probably a hybrid mishmash! We did the same one year and got a fruit which looked rather like you describe. They were orange inside and were edible, but not great. They were also too small to be worth much. Squashes cross very easily so it's always a gamble if you use seed saved from a bought fruit. You can never be sure what you might get.

Butternuts and all squashes are right tarts, they cross pollinate easily. If it's a non F1 and you want seed, you need to bag a female flower, when it starts to open grab a fresh male flower( easiest to rip off his petals) and do the x pollination yourself and then re bag until the butternut has started to grow

It'll be edible, some of my crosses were better than either parent...
