If so, how are they doing? I was supposed to plant out in October, but only just got round to it the other day.

I did this. But they were overcome by botrytis in October so I composted them; there didn't seem much point in planting out the few (<10%) survivors.
I blame the multi-purpose compost. I really struggle to keep it at the right moisture level. Watering from below the trays seem to suck up much more water than the old fashioned peat-based composts used to. -
I did in August and ran out of time, so they are still in their modules...
Looking strong but a bit squashed to together, so have to decide what to do with them now...
Separate and move to other single modules or leave as is til Spring or plant into ground given the mild weather forecast...I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

I managed to save mine from an attack of mould by thinning and moving outside - I didn't sow that many (one window box full) anyway as it's just an experiment. I now have 25 seedlings planted a large onion's width apart in my polytunnel, and I'm hoping for the best! They look so frail, it's hard to believe they'll ever come to anything.
Tripmeup, I would be tempted to leave them in their modules now - they won't be doing much growing for a while anyway, and a move followed by a really cold spell could do them in!He-Pep!Comment

you may have been better pricking the plants out into cell packs or small pots and planting them out once the soil warms up in spring time. I use onion sets for my overwintering crop. Shakespeare works well for me but I have grown senshyu yellow in the past and they have done wellComment

Ever had the idea that you just are not meant to ever grow onions?

I have sowed 'Senshyu' seed in modules at mid august, and have planted out on halloween with my garlic. Also planted out some 'Troy' sets as well. The 'Senshyu' seems to be growing well. When I get around to it I will take a photo to show, how the're doing!Comment
