  • Delaying onion sets

Just a quick query on behalf of OH. He was wondering whether, if he refrigerated onion sets it would delay them sprouting and allow him to plant them at staggered intervals for spring onions.
    Any opinions most welcome.

At a guess probably no,overwintering sets seem to keep growing in soil when the surface is frosted.

AP might have a definitive reply later though

I'd say no - sets want to bulb up and you are better off with seeds.

      Hi to OH though. *waves

Thanks folks. It's what I suggested (going with seeds) will pass the message and waves to him. I think it's safe to say he'll wave back Zaz.

Just tell him you are always right. He'll get it eventually.

Spring planted onion sets as opposed to the overwintering types will not like being chilled, in fact it may cause them to bolt. Keep in a cool airy place until planting time. Spring/salading onions from seed is my advice also .
