    Cukes on dull days

    During the recent sunny weather, I have been putting my cucmber plants outside on a table to get maximum sunlight and to strengthen stems in the breeze.

    On windy days I find a wee space in my unheated greenhouse for them although this is becoming more difficult.....it's standing room only in there

    But on cold days I keep them indoors, warm and toasty, on the windowsill.

    Apparently, the coming weather is chilly for a while.
    I am wondering which is worse.
    Exposure to lower daytime temps in the greenhouse (which is very draughty) or lack of sunlight indoors?

    I just know they'll keel over at the slightest excuse.

    I have the same problem and have opted for the chilly conditions rather than low light, once these plants get leggy they never seem to recover. In the green house I cover them with some bubble wrap at night.

      I have only just set seed today so will hopefully avoid the bad spell.

      I would however plump for heat, if they get leggy just plant them like toms they will throw out new roots and be the stronger for it.

        I'll go for the keep'em snug indoors option, they might get a bit leggy, but they shouldn't commit hara-kiri

          Mine are still indoors. With the predicted cold spell on the way they'll be staying there. Consider maximising available light with reflective panels behind the plants. That definitely makes a difference. I'd also turn the radiator down low if you have one under the windowsill that the plants are on. The general room temperature should be quite adequate.

            Mine's not been sown yet think I'll be waiting a week or two, I've sown them to early before and ended up carrying huge plants between the kitchen and GH twice a day.

              Not sown my cukes yet but given that you have them, my plan would be to put them in the greenhouse, perhaps protected with a layer of fleece or plastic (or better still a cloche or similar) to keep the draught off. There is plenty of time to sow more if they do keel over, and I think a weak, leggy plant is probably worse than starting again.

              The temperatures are definitely set to fall around Sunday for at least a couple of days, but after that there is mega uncertainty. Sunday night looks the most challenging at the moment with temperatures here forecast to fall to -2. I will be wrapping everything outside in layers of fleece and hoping for the best.
