Default Cucumber!!

Hello, I've just picked my first cucumber ("Tasty Burpless green") and i picked when 9 inches in length as stated. When i picked it the cucumber was firm to touch but the following day it has now become soft and squidgy. Is this right? or has something gone wrong? Once i got the cucumber home it was left out for some time before going into the fridge. Can anyone advise me on what they do with the cucumber once picked from the plant. My 5 cucmber plants are all planted outside. Many thanks,

My Tasty Burpless Green are exactly the same Nelvis - even taking the cucumber off the plant and putting it straight into the fridge it is soft the next day. Terrible yield as well. Maybe this year's conditions just don't suit this variety?

Oh dear!
My cucumber produced one splendid fruit which was huge and delicious. I picked it over a week ago and we're still eating it and it's firm as ever.
All the other small ones took one look at monster cue and gave up and fell off though.

I've grown Wautoma and Marketmore with (for me) much success. No softening and this year I've actually managed to avoid the problems pickledtink has had which I had the year before last. I was all for giving up growing cukes but my daughter adores them so I keep trying.

I've been growing Burpless Tasty Green and they have been very productive and unbelievable tasty. Very few of mine have even lasted overnight and my OH and I have just been snacking on them freshly picked yum nothing better.
I have been pretty generous with the water so that might be it .

Not sure what to suggest. I have been growing Burpless Tasy Green for a couple of years now, and am really pleased with them. I water them every day, and allow them to grow up to 12 inches. I wouldn't have thought leaving it out of the fridge would have made any difference. Better luck next year?

Not really climatically suitable for outdoor cukes up here but my greenhouse grown F1 Topsy has been absolutely superb both last year and this , both in terms of yield and taste. Keeps in fridge no bother, other than they don't last long - I'll eat one a day no bother.

Same here. Grew marketmore this year with great success. I know i have said this before on another thread, but when i was going away on holidays i planted my cucs and peppers outdoors (last week of May) as there was nobody to take care of them in the greenhouse. Four weeks later i dug them up and brought them back in again. In spite of all this i am getting a great crop.

Many thanks to all who replied to my question, i'll keep watering and see what happens with the rest of the cucumbers that are on the plants and going to mature (hopefully!!!) or try something different next year. Thanks again.
