  • Cucumber seedling help required

Hi guys was just wondering if anyone could help me with my cucumber seedling problems?! I manage to germinate them fine but the the edges of the leaves turn brown and crispy subsequent leaves develop then turn yellow around the edges. I am using fresh seed 'burpless' and 'crystal lemon' and multipurpose compost.

How are you watering them? And where are you keeping them?

They are very tender and dont like cold, they look to me like they have been chilled, it doesn't need frost to killl them and at night it has been very cold lately. Still time to plant more.

Or you have them on a window cill with a radiator under it and they are getting too hot, it looks like the biggest leaf has copped it, maybe because its overhanging the rad?

Re: temperature : they need a minimum of 10C.

FWIW mine are similar but not as bad but have a yellow edge to their biggest 'real' leaf. As with my tomatoes I have put this down to watering, I have them in a propagator with 16 set as min night temps ! They don't look too bad so fingers crossed mine make it into the glasshouse ! steep learning curve this is for me !!!!

They are under a grow lamp on a heated propagator. I turn the light off at night.
Thanks for all the comments. Last year they made it to the greenhouse but then keeled over! My toms did fine though.

I've not grown cucumbers (going to try this year but not started yet) but I wonder if the bigger leaf has got too near the light and been scorched?

I have found in the past that cucumbers are hard to grow. I think they start to grow then see me coming at them with a watering can and think "i dont like the look of this, time to keel over lads!"

the leaves on the picture attached look like mine usually do to start with but over time i find that leaves go brown and crispy but new leaves form and the plant coninues to grow.

They are a bit picky when it comes to watering and i find that they like a little and often so that the soil is moist but not constantly wet

Cucumbers like humidity. It's why they can be difficult to grow along side tomatoes and why people sometimes put a curtain round them. I mist mine in the tunnel (also helps prevent spider mite). They don't like having their stem wet, so bottom watering.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!
