  • Cucumber question

I am growing 'Flamingo' cucumber for the first time. They are producing lots of fruit but I haven't pared them back or infact done anything with them other than let them grow. What should I have done for future reference. I just seems a bit of a tangle mess at the moment. What stage should I stop it growing upwards.

    Are they inside or outside?
In the polytunnel I tend to stop mine at the crop wire, 6ft. If I were you I would stop most of the shoots, but leave a few and tie up a string to train them up that, so you can continue cropping.
There is a diagram on my blog.
As for next year, it depends on the room you have, and how many plants. Some people who are short of space tend to cut all the shoots off, but I like to fan my plant out training some shoots out, like I said.
If there are too many cucumbers on your plant, some tiny ones will turn yellow, so just nip those off.
I am sure you will still get more than enough.

Like TK I train mine up a fan-shaped trellis or net and stop them when they get a bit unruly. I'd rather have a decent crop of good-size cukes than hundreds of little ones that don't come to anything.

As an aside I didn't think I'd get a crop this year due to the cold spring. The first sowing failed to germinate and second and third were patchy with sad little plants that just sulked for weeks. However, come the end of May they stormed away and are just as good as those from years with a warm spring.

I am growing my cucumbers outside and I just let them go where they want to. Some people thin the cucumbers out so they can get bigger cucumbers - I don't mind what size they are as we just love cucumbers.
