  • Cucumber marketmore

I'm growing these from a packet of seeds free with a magazine but not sure at what stage I shoudl harvest them. The first one I trie d was a bit tasteless and not very juicy so I left the next one a bit longer ( about 6 inches) but still thought the texture was disappointing.

Has anyone else grown these and what did they think of them?

They are quite firm and crunchy, not watery like you get in the shops, at least ours were last year. But we liked em like that.

How big were they when you picked them?

Growing these for the first time this year but started late so at the moment they are only about 2" long and very thin and prickly so still got a while to go yet. but hopefully they will be ok when ready to pick.
The only reason i chose Marketmore was it was the only one available from the shop at such short notice from when i got my greenhouse.
I will probably get an all female veriety next year so there is no pinching out to do.
        Cheers .... John

I pick at about 6". As has been said, they aren't like shop cukes - I really like them.

The all-female varities seem to be F1. Does anyone know of any non-F1s all-females - for seed saving purposes?

You need a lady and a man to make babies so don't think the all females would make viable seed - but someone may correct me!

I've picked Marketmore when they're about 5-6inches long. Sometimes I've peeled them before eating as they tend to be a bit tough when you grow them outdoors. I think all outdoor grown cukes are a bit drier than others & have larger seeds in them but they generally taste O.K.

I was wondering about mine that are around 4 inches and fat. I think they probably need picking now then.

Mt marketmore have been an absolute disaster. Lots of cucumbers but not one has actually grown. They are all still on the plants but remain at around 2cm. All 3 plants are the same. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? The plants look very healthy otherwise!

Marketmore are classed as an outdoor cucumber but obviously do a lot better in the greenhouse. As an outdoor cucumber they have male and female flowers and need to be fertalised so don't remove the male flowers. Make sure you don't grow them near an all female plant or else you will ruin the crop on the all female plant. I have got 3 in the greenhouse and just can't keep up with the crop, I picked 5 on Monday and there is more ready already. The skin is a bit tough especially compared to shop bought but then you can do the same as OH and peel them. The flavour is ten times better than the shop ones though.

Maybe try to give them a huge dose of water? I emptied half a watering can on mine this morning, and I swear there are two 3in cucs there now where there were only tiny ones this morning.

I have one plant growing up an East facing house wall, so it's quite warm. I've had 3 cucs so far, and there are about 5 more getting to be ready this weekend. I've never had so much success before - I used to grow them in pots...

I have 4 plants each in an Asda bucket. So far I have had 1 cucumber from each plant about 6" long at harvest. The skins are tough and prickly, but the flesh is lovely and moist and tasty so I peel them. There are loads more flowers, so I am hoping for a lot more fruit and I too give them lots and lots of water.

if you dont remove the male flowers wouldn't the fruit become bitter.. i always thought you removed the male flowers so they dont pollinate... ?
