  • Cucumber germination

I,v just been reading my Dr Hessayon Greenhouse book (page 73 if u have it) and it says , in the sowing bit, "Germination takes place in 2-3 days-do not use seedlings which germinate after this time." It gives no reason why! My cucumber seeds took 2 weeks to germinate......do i have to start again? Whats the reason? ty

Hope it isn't right - mine have been in soil for over a week (I think)

Mine were on a heater mat under halogen growlights, 4 varietys , one type marketmore germinated in about a week, the other 3 types took 2 weeks, but thats with lots of heat

2-3 days seems a bit quick to give up on them in normal conditions

How odd I've never really taken any notice of how long they take to germinate, but I'm quite sure I've broken that 'rule' and my cuc's have done just fine
I would love to know what the reasoning is behind it!

I germinate everything under the sink between two strips of damp kitchen roll in a takeaway tub.

My Burpless seeds took 3 days to germinate and the Retsina seeds 4 days.

If it germinates, I grow it, never noticed any weak cuke plants as a result of later germination and my cukes have always been good to me.

Rat, fantastic cucumbers! I guess they are in a large polytunnel or grenhouse, how high do they go and what supports them? Just the bamboo canes or are they on rope? How old are the plants at this point?

In my tunnel (24ft x 60ft). They are started in 3" pots and planted in the ground when the space is available - when I say ground, it is just the soil to which 4 to 6 inches well rotted FYM is incorporated every year. They grow up 8ft canes and the canes are usually okay but can be tied to the crop bars if need be.
The photo was takem just the day before I started picking last year - can't be more specific - I do start a diary every year but get way too busy to keep it up.

Rat, can I ask as an inexperienced grower of cucs. Do you remove the lower leaves when the fruit starts developing as your picture doesn't seem to show many lower leaves?
