    cucamelon germination

    I am trying to grow cucamelons.

    I sowed seed 3 weeks ago in the conservatory, and not a peep!

    I had a poke in the compost, and the seeds have not rotted, they are just sitting there doing nothing!

    Has anybody else had experience of growing these?

    I might sow some more and put them in a heated prop and see what happens....

    Put mine in a heated propagator a while ago.
    5 sown, 5 came up within 3 weeks, 4 have now been in GH boarder for a week and 1 spare in a pot (just in case?).
    Never grown them before, but look healthy enough at approx 8-10" high.
    They look like they will take off soon, so I imagine you have plenty of time to sow some more.

      They really can take a while, some of mine have taken 4/5 weeks. I dug up a couple and nothing happening but just left the seed tray and almost gave up, they only got a tiny sprinkle of water when doing other things. I think they like to be forgotten about.
      Same thing happened last year. I direct sowed and thought I had pulled them up by accident, I let the garden go out of control as went away and came back and found cucamelons everywhere
      I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

        I brought seeds where supposedly guaranteed but nothing. Planted 8 weeks ago on draught free windows still but gave up.

          hmmm, seems erratic then....

          I will leave my existing ones in the conservatory.

          And will sow 20 more tonight and will leave in kitchen in heated prop and see what happens...

            I chitted two seeds on a wet paper towel in the propagator on Friday, by Sunday both of them had tiny sprouts! Fastest and most successful of my crops this year. They're now both in 3" pots, no sign of green yet though.

              Sown in modules and put on a sunny patch of floor in the living room (where all tender stuff is germinated much to the annoyance of the cat) and they started coming up after 12 days and now after 16 days 50% are up. (Seed bought from Seedparade.)

                Got home tonight after thinking I would throw away my pots of 'no shows' and so excited to see 4 little shooting pots. Eight weeks so don't give up!

                  Sowed mine 4/5 weeks ago, they literally wont slow down now haha big green leaves and lots of stringy bits (like peas) going everywhere. Dont kno what to do with them atm

                    I sowed some the weekend and put in the propergator They have all shown there little heads Never done them before

                      I had given up on most of mine after 5 weeks- perhaps I was a little premature throwing them away and resowing.I have got 2 out of 6 seeds sown but struggling with the propagator overheating in the sun,then compost drying out if I took the lid off. Bit cooler now so might work better.
                      Will be interesting to see if they taste nice and are worth growing

                        Just stuck them on the soil warming cable and now have far to many. Used Suttons James Wong's seed.
                        Was not that bothered which seams to work best for me.
                        Bought F1 Shirley toms and got poor results. Aldi seeds 5 packets for £2 is the best ones for me for germination.

                          Just put mine in and hopefully they will show up. Not sure I have the patience to wait for 8 weeks.

                            Try putting them in a sealable plastic bag with the propagator lid off - they'll still get warmth but won't lose as much moisture. I started taking the lid off because I'm sure I came home to the smell of roasted pumpkin seeds one evening!

                              I have realized that most of seeds sown so far this year,are extremely slow at getting going,
                              sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these
