  • Cross pollination

Hi I've read that runner beans and French beans won't cross, has anyone tried growing them very close together? I want to grow runners on one side of a cane support and French beans in the other so they will be a couple of feet apart, do you think this will be OK?

Cross pollination is only an issue if you want to save seeds, as the plant you get next year maybe a cross. If you want the beans don't worry and mix away. We grow mixed beans adjacent to each other, this year a wigwam of climbing Frenchies, a wigwam of climbing borlottis and a couple of runners between

Yes, as already said they are fine as long as you aren't seed saving.
Runners and Frenchies don't often cross but they can. I grew Cosse Violetta (purple French beans) and white flowered runners on the same frame - next year I had purple flowering runners - pretty

I always grow them close together, they don't cross. The runners however do often cross with other runners grown nearby.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Yes, I understand they can but I've never had any problems with my French beans crossing wth each other, let alone with runners
