  • Crimson Flowered broadies!

I've grown these along with others for about three years with seed I originally got from NTG.

The genepool has now become tainted and I seem to be growing white flowered, tall, short, bushy, sparse all from the same Crimson flowered self kept seed.

I have made the concious decision to start again from scratch. None of my allotment neighbours seem to grow broadies so hopefully by growing only this one variety I should be ale to keep the strain relatively pure.

Hopefully the seeds I've purchased from Thompson and morgan will have been grown in the same way.

I could grow them under enviromesh but one of the main reasons for growing them is the decorative effect which would be totally lost under enviromesh.

Its a shame to ditch my existing beans but sometimes a clean sweep is called for!

I feel Crimson flowered broadies have got it all, tasteful, heavy cropping, short stocky plants and of course those crimson flowers..........what more can anyone want!

Me too Snadger they're the only ones I'm growing this next year, I grew them this year and I was also very impressed with them, but I forgot to save some seeds, so I was fortunate enough to acquire some in a seed swap plus my neighbour gave me some as well, I don't know if you noticed how fragrant they are as well....a bladdy good all rounder one would say.

That's good to know - I've selected them from the HSL.

I got mine from Aunty Flum (bless her) and they are truely striking. For a lovely purple podded soup pea(or petit pois) with fantastic flowers try the lancashire lad, think these should be grown for the flowers alone with the added bonus of the peas at the end!

If you really want to keep the strain from mixing, select 1 or 2 healthy strong plants and bag the flowers before they open. let the flowers open and keep shaking everytime you pass. Although you won't get many seeds from each batch of flowers, you can garuntee the strain is pure, or carefully remove bag on a non windy day and remove the petals gently and manually pollenate then re-bag
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

I have been growing the purple podded pea for a similar amount of time as the broadies but even though I grow other types of heritage pea, the purple podded ones always seem to come true to type!

Fingers crossed you get them then, thought it a bit strange that you couldn't chose which variety you could have of broadies so I didn't pick them as it would be sod's law I'd get one of the varieties I already had

Will they still germinate sufficiently RedThorn? I grew mine at home last year with seeds also from Flum and they were beautiful. Only ate one meal off them as I wanted seeds for myself and a few friends so fingers crossed they are pure. Intend to grow a few at home again this year for seed and a load to eat at the lottie but it would be nice if I could avoid the need to have some at home another time.

from experience(I grew some in a greenhouse to get a headstart ) they do, but only have about 25% pollenation through tapping repeatedly alone

Cheers Ma, I'm hopeful of a little package when I get in tonight. They've (HSL) always been good to me in the past.

Ah yes but you've got to double cross your fingers with them this year as they said you couldn't specify which broadies you got so firstly that you'll get your first choice of broad beans and secondly that they'll send you the crimson ones (seem to remember it was a lucky dip out of about 6!) so with those odds having a Flum shaped plan B is very useful

I've been compared to some funny shaped things before... but not a Plan B!

Add that to the fact that I only made first choices - my odds could be even slimmerer.

Ah yes but at least the letter B is a nice balanced letter
