hello samseed, rot can set in on courgette fruits when the flower has failed to drop off and starts to rot, when checking them over now and again if you see any stuck flowers just pull them off.

Rubbery and hollow?...hmmm- are they getting enough water?

I wondered that, specially as you say they are in containers.

I had this when I grew them last year in builder's buckets, so they're back in the ground this year. Sorry, I think you can only make sure they have plenty of water and I hope you don't get many brown ones.

If the odd one or two are browny yellow it could be that ,that courgette was not pollanated .courgettes need to be pollinated to grow on they will look fine to begin with but once the flower opens if it's not pollinated the plant will stop growing it and it will go brownish as the courgette will not seed .my first few courgettes went that way as i put them in my gh but now I hand pollinate each fruit as the flower opens all have grown on fine beware though courgette flowers only open for maybe 24hrs at best so if you spot one open get in there quick ..if you hand pollinate
