Courgette, Tomato, Butternut Squash Questions

    Courgette, Tomato, Butternut Squash Questions

    Helllooo Again……

    Courgette I have two plants one I have planted in a small Morrison’s flower bucket and the other is on our kitchen window sill as the other one I had out side got its stem eaten by a very cruel snail. (o BTW its under a mini greenhouse thingy) so my question is will they be okay in the Large Flower buckets or not?

    Tomato I Have 2 plants of 2 different kinds one is a trailer and the other is just a normal One. I have 3 out side in my mini blow away thingy and one on my window sill (just to be safe). When will it be okay to plant them out in there Hanging baskets for one type and the final position for the other?

    Butternut squash, I have a butternut squash plant as we love them but I am a tad confused about the size that they grow and the amount of space they require. Has anybody got any Pictures of a full grown plant outdoors so I can see roughly where I should plant it and also what do you plant yours into? I cannot plant into the ground as it is clay and we have drainage issues.

    Sorry about all the questions and yes I have tried Google. But would prefer info from people who actually know what they are talking about 

    I wouldn't plant any of those out until after the last frost. That's late May or early June usually.

      It very much depends on variety re how big they grow, Harrier butternuts is bushy rather than trailing, but some of them grow quite large.

      So which variety are you growing?

      IMO the morrisons flower buckets won't be big enough for a courgette

        The Butternut is a F1 Hunter.

            Bexy I grew mine in 20 inch diameter pots and they sprawled over a trailer leaned up against the wall I got a fair few fruits of them.

              Thats 3 plants isnt it ? That is a great idea i have some old Wood Framed Wire that use to be a G Pig hun i Could lean it up our fence thanks for that how high did they grow as our fence is a 6 footer but if it might grow over i will have to tell our next door neighbour so her kids dont pull it etc

                Bexy thats right one plant in each pot and I pinched them out at 6ft and that seemed to make more side shoots appear.

                  Last year, Gladys the BNS was grown in a Poundland grow bag and upwards. She got to 6ft. However, I didn't get any viable fruits and in my defence; I knew nothing about growing them last year. I did a lot of learning! This year's BNS is going to the lotment and will be allowed to scramble.

                  The rest of the squashes are currently sat in a window sill, and won't be going out til the end of may. They get very big, very quickly. The one ball courgette is looks as though it has attenae. I rather like my triffids.

                    your tomatoes will be alright to plant out after the frosts. They are more hardy than squash or courgette, but if you plant out either of those before the frosts, they will die.

                      Hi Bexy.
                      My one tip is if you grow Squashes in the ground, then put a cane at the plants centre, otherwise you won't know where to water it when it grows and sprawls. Don't forget to put a bottle or something over the cane end, so you don't poke your eye's out.

                        Last year I cut bottom off bottles and sunk it into ground near my squash plants, watered into the bottle so water went direct to plants roots

                        I have some perforated drip irrigation pipes this year though
