  • Courgette cultivar identification

Fruit have set! But i don't know what they are. Not sure if an identification is possible at this early stage, nevertheless, could anyone venture any guesses as to what variety these are:

    Courgette plant 1:

Courgette plant 2 - this one is oblong- rather than globe-shaped, and is yellow even at the pre-flowering stage (i thought it would perhaps abort, luckily i didn't snip it off!):

Finally, there's this one, which is unusual in its flowers. Unlike the others, which are indistinguishable trumpet-shaped things which flower for a single day only, these flowers persist for several days (they close and open with the night and day), in addition, they are shaped like discs rather than trumpets:

And here is its fruit bud, which looks like it may be a normal-shaped courgette, unlike the others:

Where did you get the plants from? Or did you sow seed?

These were sown from seed, a jumbo packet simply labelled 'courgette', from a local farmers' market. At the time i didn't know that there are in fact many different types of courgette, i had no idea they'd produce such hulking great vines. I certainly wouldn't recommend growing such varieties in containers!

the second one is crook neck squash, if you let it grow big enough it'll be very knobbly.
You can pick and eat small like courgette.
the first one looks like tondo di toscana but I could be wrong.
          third one, no idea sorry

Yep, first one looks like my tondo di toscana's although yours is a deeper green colour. I like the one that looks like a lemon - never seen that before.

Are you sure that the third one is a courgette? The flowers and fruit look rather like melon to me.....

Next time if you are spending precious time and space on them, buy some decent seed

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I might be wrong about the second one. I've got one growing in a tyre, it looks the same as that, but it's labelled uchiki kuri.

I grew crook neck squash last year and it looked exactly the same, hence the confusion. I'm pretty sure it is uchiki kuri because this year, I managed to label everything properly [ after lasts years debacle]

If they're getting big and vine like then some of them are probably squashes rather than courgettes and I too think the flatter flower one is a melon as it looks exactly the same as the ones I'm growing. Let them grow on a bit and see what happens.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                      @Alison

I think you're right. Two more-experienced growers who've had a look round have told me my courgette plants look more to them like squashes. Now they've matured a bit more, none of them are alike. In addition to those above, one is like a pale yellow pumpkin, one is like a pale green pumpkin, however, the one with the odd flowers is growing like a very furry courgette or cucumber. Also, each plant is so far carrying only one fruit.

Sympathies - though I ususally mislay labels rather than not know!
One thought - I've grown a squash (potimarron) which is probably well over 15ft long now - it goes out and is very very climbing - lots of tendrils
Most of my "normal" courgettes are ground-sitting - fairly condensed, though a lot of leaves
I've tried a Tromboncino courgette this year - very slow / unreliable to germinate, but the one I really believe IS Tromboncino is showing signs of wanting to climb (tendrils) but nothing like the squash
So - maybe look at how they want to grow? (though I'm sure others will correct me where I'm wrong!!)

                        good luck
                        S

(who would have had some weird seeds from cross-breeding in France except that the cold killed most, and the slugs killed the rest!)
