I grew it last year and they were mottled light green like a courgette but then turned the right colour when they were ripe.

I sowed three hunter squash seeds from the same packet- they were all the same shape initially (the fruits, I mean) but now two plants have smaller, lighter green fruits and are more like fat teardrops and one has really deep green coloured fruits and looks more butternut squash like in terms of shape and size.

            Who knows! LOL.

Courgettes and Butternuts cannot form hybrids as they are different species of curcurbits.

In any case, it would be the seeds that wre hybrids, not the fruit surrounding the seeds. Next generation, not this generation, I mean.

I thought that they could? I polinated my butternut with my courgettes last year... or am I deluding myself! I thought thats why its hard to save seed from squash as they are so promiscuous?

Courgettes can cross perfectly well with winter squash and like to erm get about a bit so you do have to be careful

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Interesting paper. I was quoting from Organic way, this Summer's edition, where they were answering a question from a reader.
