  • Corn

Everything far too close together I know :-/ but seem to be getting results so far. My corn seems to be doing well but what do you think my chances are of getting a decent crop? Or any crop?

Yeah, a bit close together those ... but then I did the same last year You don't seem to have many plants there, so pollination might be a bit hit and miss. You could take a chance and let them go the full course and maybe get a cob or two to fully develop, or you could harvest early (when tassles first show) as babycorn

Looking at it a second time, I think I'd personally favour babycorn from those plants. They're not super tall, and the male flowers are out already

Ok thanks! I might do both take a few off early and leave a few on see how I do I have been shaking them every now and again and there's 9 plants altogether couldn't bring myself to throw any away so just stuck them all in. This year was my first proper year so I've done a lot of different things next year I'm going to cut back drastically on the amount. Get a lot more corn going and space them out properly

I was new to it when I grew mine last year, and I think each plants would have done more if I had increased the spacing. Then again, I grow in containers which made it a bit more limiting I was still impressed with what the plants did last year, but mine were upwards of 6ft when the male flowers appeared on those that went to fruition. the smaller ones had lovely babycorn, but didn't mature well

What determines how high they go then? How can I ensure I get decent sized plants when I try again? The tallest one in the picture is probably pushing 5-6ft the others are a good foot or so smaller though

Oh ... they looked smaller. I'll take another look at the pics tomorrow when my eyes aren't as tired

Haha it is deceptive in the picture but the tallest one is just shorter than me I'd say and I'm about 5'10

my sweetcorn were planted early (from garden centre plugs) and they are only about 4 foot tall now ... after I planted, we had a cold night with frost, but they have recovered fully

I planted baby sweetcorn aswell, then gave them to my neighbour as I did not know that one should not plant more than one species in the same area .... those are now nearly 5 and a half foot tall

I've planted three different types in my block. Having just read that you shouldn't plant different types together, that may explain why not much seems to be happening!
