  • Conclusive spud trial

I've just dug up my Sarpo spuds. I have Axona and Mira varieties growing next to each other and I selected them for their blight resistance. The Axona have a good yield of medium to large size red skinned tubers. The Mira are in general even larger with red skins too. The main difference which was very obvious was that the Axona are completely free of slug damage whereas the Mira are very badly attacked. Neither have blight.

I shall definitely be growing some next year along with Kestrel (hopefully for baking and boiling) and International Kidney (for salads)! The only downside is that the Axona are very floury and unsuitable for boiling, but they will be excellent for chips and roasting.

I hope that this may be useful to those still to choose their spuds.

Very useful, we just bought 2 spuds for baking as apart from the Kestrel [which no large ones are left] they were all slugged. Fine for peeling but not for jackets...

We were just talking about which ones to get for next year, about 3 minutes ago. How strange.

I'll pop your varieties in my big black book for January.

Thanks Capsid, I do love a good trial bringing good results.

Axona sound good except - I do like me mash! However, what an excuse for pigging out on chips - "My spuds are only suitable for this".
I don't have enough room to grow main crop potaotes though. Earlies for me.
