Built a new compost heap at the weekend and moved the stuff from the garden down to it.....thought you all might like to see a photo !

sorry i didnt respond to everyone straight away but i am unfortunately in london at the moment and havent logged on for a while....so pleased everyone likes the compost heap altho i understand that it is best to fill in the sides, have a front and cover them.......there are more photos on my page of the plot.... it is a beautiful place - hate being away!Comment

Gorgeous - spectacular spot! And great containers - Nothing can rain-wash into the river from your compost though can it? Nutrients getting into water systems can be quite a problem, so I'd maybe not site them on a slope down to a shore - but it's hard to tell how far away the river is, it's probably fine...and I'm sure you don't get quite so much rain where you are as we do in Scotland ; )Comment

I was thinking along the same lines. Personally I'd have put the heaps as far away from the lake as possible and somewhere much less obvious, like in a hidden corner. Where they are situated it would look much better if you had your most showy vegetables growing there, or even better, some wild or even more cultivated flowers.Originally posted by Gro-Bag View Post
I reckon they need to be better covered up better too. I can't get off with these bins that have loads of slats in them. The bins that I made have very little area for the air to get in, but they aren't smelly in any way at all, apart from when I add the contents of my Bokashi Buckets, but that smell soon goes, and the stuff is converting to compost very nicely. I do turn it from time to time, but not very often. I reckon that keeping the heat and moisture in the heap is far more important than worrying about having enough air in there.

thanks for all the advice on the compost - unlikely that anything will leak into the river unless we have a massive flood (which can happen but very rarely) however it is a massive river flowing strongly from way up in the mountains and right down the Garonne estuary ...considered putting it in a less obvious place but it should be ok where it is ...(the compost heap that is, not the river!) however we will be filling in the sides when we get back (going home today!)Last edited by Jardiniere; 07-10-2009, 11:06 AM.Comment
