    Collection of Seed

    Hi

    This may be a stupid question but I would appreciate your thoughts. If I collect seed from a tomato ( a very sweet orange plum- variety unknown) will I be able to grow that seed next year without issue or can it be similar to flowers where you would need to propagate from cuttings as the seed may not be viable?

    Thank you for any thoughts offered.

    It's worth a try. If it's an F1 hybrid your tom next year won't be the same as this year's. It's worth a go though. If I had an unknown tom that I'd enjoyed I'd save seeds.

      I agree with Flummery. The thing to remember is to use a very ripe fruit for your seed and to wash off every bit of juice from round the seed. The juice is a germination inhibitor.

        Well worth a go but there is a possibility of variation

        One way to clean the seed is to squash up a ripe tomato and put it in a jam jar with plenty of water for 3 days to ferment. Wash off in a sieve and leave to dry on kitchen roll then you can pick out the seeds
