  • Christmas Potatoes

    Just a quick question

Do many people bother growing the potatoes that would be ready for Christmas (on an allotment)? I have been having a look in the internet and they all seem to be more expensive than the 1st, 2nd mains etc?

Has anyone had much success and if so with which variety, or is it not really worth bothering with?

    Thanks Kazza72

Never managed it myself (not tried although have some to give it a go with this year) but one of my colleages always does. He puts them in sacks in the garden and then carries them under cover when frost is forecast. Seems to work well for him but you have to get them in early enough or they'll not get enough warmth / light to produce much.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My first attempt this year seems to have been a success so I'm going have a go. It will be fun.

I've tried a few times, with no success. Sometimes it's to do with forgetting to protect from frost, other times maybe not sown early enough. In any case, I've only ever got zilch back, even leaving them till well after Christmas.

I'm trying again this year, though - we now have a polytunnel, I'll put them in there and still keep an eye for frost, adding another cover if necessary.
