  • Christmas Potatoes In Same Soil?

    Hi Folks,

Hope everyone is well, haven't been about for a while, new job is slaughtering me but as most know beggars can't be choosers!

Anyway, I'm gonna grow some Xmas spuds this year and wondered if they can go in the same soil as my earlies / mains?

Probably a stupid question but you know me
    Cheers

If you've had good crop rotation previously, ie not grown Spuds in that patch for the last few years, I expect they'll be OK. Could be worth the experiment anyway? Wouldn't want to do it year after year though. Good luck.

Don't, for a second, believe that I know what I'm talking about - I just read it elsewhere a while ago!

I assumed that the Chrissie spuds would be going into tubs/buckets and eventually into the greenhouse or they surely wont be ready for Christmas or am i talking out of my proverbial? If it's tubs that you have previously grown spuds in Broadway I personally would just add some FBB or growmore or summat or do half and half with fresh or garden soil and give it a go. It gets so expensive when you have to keep replacing the compost doesn't it. I am sure I read on here, fairly recently at that, that some grapes do just replenish rather than replace. As usual I could well be wrong.

Just replenish the compost, that's what I'll be doing. A commercial grower round here grew potatoes in the same small field four years on the trot with no problems. I think some people get a bit hung up on rotation.

Providing there as been no sign of disease with your last crop then as above go ahead and if you can add a little pelleted potato fertilizer as well as the base fertilizer then so much the better.

You might need to give them some cover in the winter months Danny. I'm trying some for Christmas, but they'll be in tubs so I can whip them inside near Christmas.

When do people plant spuds for Christmas? I've tried over several years but never got a result. I usually plant in late August or September, but reading here suggests to me I should start earlier.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's done them successfully - when you planted, what you did etc.
                Thanks.
