    Chitting Potatoes

    I bought some Arran Pilot potatoes from B&Q yesterday and quite a few of them have long thin white shoots on - what should I do? Is it too early to put them in the polypots I am going to grow them in? I havent got a greenhouse or should I take off these shoots and chit them normally as I am doing with my Charlotte and Pentland Javelin?

    Also they are quite big seed potatoes - how many should I plant to the pot? (they are about the size of a standard bucket)

    All wise words welcomed plus note to myself write out 100 times "I must not buy anymore seed potatoes"

    Long thin white shoots come from the seed spuds being stored too warm and not light enough (just like when you leave a bag of spuds in the cupboard and forget about them). Are you planning to grow your potatoes in pots or in the ground? If you pick the whole white shoot off you run the risk of no more shoots coming from that "eye", so I would just put them somjwhere light and not too warm and wait for them to shoot normally.

      I am going to grow them in pots. I will get them in a seed tray along with my charlottes and pentland javelin and hope they shoot normally.
