  • Chilli string

    Hi guys,

Well I'm feeling very 'farmers wifely' at the moment as I now have my own chilli string hanging from the pan rack which is above our (currently defunct but soon to be replaced) solid fuel Rayburn .

I had read (possibly in GYO but, frankly, I'm 3 rum and cokes past looking for the appropriate article tonight ) that larger chillis were better for air drying using the 'string 'em up' method and as my smaller, hotter patio chillis are now starting to turn red, I decided that I'd take all my red Cayenne Peppers off and sew them onto some heavy duty thread and let them dry naturally (if they get the chance which is unlikely).

    Anyway, so here they are:

Judging by the number of green cayennes still on the plants, I'll have a matching bunch on the other end of the pan rack very, very soon .

Shhhh, I thought I'd got away with that

Seriously though they are incredibly plump and luscious and definitely real and it was too dark in the kitchen without the flash.

Did you polish them? My dried Chillis were all dull and brittle.

Hi Glutton, these are just newly picked today - give them a couple of weeks (if I haven't used them in the mean time) and they'll lose their shine but hopefully retain any heat they have (and no, I haven't polished them ).

I have a mixture of types of chillis but all are green - that's inside on the windowsill and outside in the greenhouse. Really looking forward to stringing them up if they ever get to that stage! They will compliment my string of shallots that are hanging up from the spiral staircase!

They look great Reet, I am still waiting for mine to ripen, but then there will be enough for strings for my daughter and son and plenty for in the vodka!

They do look fantastic - my Cayennes have started ripening so I'm hoping they get as red and shiny as yours Reet.

Did you sew them or tie them? I was adviced at the chilli festival to sew them...

Well I used a needle to poke a hole near the top of the stem and then pull thick thread through before doing a single loop to hold each chilli in place ..... so a bit of both really I guess.
