  • chilli seed question

    Hi everyone

quick question ref chilli seeds if i may
i was given some dried chilli's vacum packed (for kitchen use) for xmas and was looking over them last night to see what i need to use them for.
they have all the seeds still in the packs so question is

can i use them for growing ? would they be too dry
just theres some different variants than i have already seeding so was hoping to add to the collection

    TIA
    Nick

I was going to try this with some dried shop bought chillies I have but I had that much stuff to sow I didn't bother. You could always try a germination test - put some on some damp kitchen roll in a plastic bag/container or covered in clingfilm then put somewhere warm ie airing cupboard or propagator. Infact I might do this now as I'm still curious as to whether they'd be viable

If the chillis are f1 varieties the plants may not produce like for like, also I have done this with chillis I dried from a plant I was given it was really easy but the plants got attacked quite badly by bugs and pests whereas the parent plant although next to them was unaffected it seemed to have some natural defenses not present in its 'baby' plants. But it was great fun and worked excellently all of my dried seeds germinated so its definately worth a go

That's because aphids seek out the sap on young green leafy growth and soft stems

It's also why I grow seeds in modules instead of straight into the ground: because older stronger plants aren't so attractive to pests like aphids and slugs

Probably is the answer. I've got some growing right now that came in a kitchen mix.
You can also germinate peas & beans from the dried packs for eating, found in supermarkets

                Quick update on this

i tried 10 varieties and so far 5 have sprouted and are on their way
going to keep the rest for a while longer just in case but looks like it will work with a bit of time and not allot of effort
