  • Chilli / Pepper seedling Identification?

I have just realised I may have labelled my rows wrong in my heated prop. I have a row of Californian Wonder Peppers and F1 Apache Chillies. Is there anyway I can tell the difference between the two at an early seedling stage, it makes a difference to me of where and when I plant them? Pictures would be great. There just peeking through now.

Hmmm....from what I've seen , the piccies with peppers seem to have slightly wider leaves.

( NB-I've no idea what I'm talking about here!!)

Can you recall which took longer to germinate???...I'd presume the slower ones are more likely to be chillies...

well- there ya go- 2 bits of guesswork.....( bet you wished I hadn't posted!!!!)

Here are mine. Can't tell you what variety they are because I just planted seeds from some shop bought peppers - just to see.
As you can tell, the chilli's are further advanced than the sweet peppers. They were sown in a heated propagator on the same day (28th Jan) and have been outside as often as possible in a greenhouse within a greenhouse with a couple of tea-lights to raise the temperature.
Not sure as it helps but here they are for what it's worth.
First 2 pics are chilli's and the second 2 are sweet peppers.

I expect you'll be able to figure out which is which soon after they poke their heads up, seeing as you've only got two categories. THere'll be some subtle difference.
(i wonder if the leaves might taste different as well as look different?)

Out of my 4 types of sweet pepper and 1 type of chilli seedling, the ones that stand apart most are the Purple Beauties - They are daintier-looking with narrower leaves.
THe chillis (Gelbe Kirchen) are more compact-looking seedlings.
But I can't tell apart the Marconi Rosso or the Chocolate Beauty.

Good luck, but i think you'll have no problem.

Someone who knows all about Apaches will be along...

When your peppers form their true leaves you should be well able to see the difference. The California Wonder peppers will have much bigger leaves than the chili peppers.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
