Chilli identification?

There are thousands of different types of chili - the best way to find out how hot they are is to take them off and try them.

However, usually - the bigger they are the milder they are. The bottom ones look like Tesco's Sweet Pointy Peppers.

As Zazen says there are thousands of chilli varieties, so not much chance of identifying them exactly. Where did you get them?

The round one looks like it might be a Jamie Oliver special.......Homebase perhaps?

They look lovely, but I doubt you'll ever really be sure what they are!

Like they've said ^ ^ , could be anything. Top one could be pimento (mild) or cherry belle (hot), they look the same.

As for how hot they are ... you do that by biting the bottom end of one

Yes, I realised there are thousands of different chillies when I tried to work out what they are myself. I hoped somebody might have similar plants and might recognise them.

That's where they came from, but they were without labels and looked rather lonely so I struck a deal and brought them home, along with some sweet potatoes that were half price.

The thing is, I can't manage to eat fiery chillies, but I got a volunteer to taste one of the round ones and, apparently, it's astonishingly hot for such a large fruit. Made them want to drink loads of water. So it might be Cherry Belle.

They declined the offer of tasting one off the other plant.

I've never, ever, grown chillies before. Have been given a little Dorset Naga (for the benefit of OH), which is now flowering happily on the kitchen windowsill but probably needs repotting.

I wonder if these might last more than a year too, if I can work out the best way to look after them, or would it be better to start afresh, with new plants, next year?

Don't bother growing something you won't eat then ~ have a look on here and pick a milder type

But there are others in the family who do enjoy eating hot and very hot chillies in meals, and in sauces, relishes and so on, they're looking forward to eating them.

They'll be your testers then

Seriously, bite the tip of a chilli (the end) ~ that's where it's mildest, it then gets hotter up towards the stalk. Although the heat can vary between fruits from the same plant, so if you're sensitive to them, always take that tiny bite first

I have just acquired a mystery chiili plant. The exact words were "Take this chilli plant. Put it in your greenhouse. See what happens."

It looks a generic chilli plant! So I can't even ask for pointers

I have been driving past a community garden centre for days. I finally as an afters School friday treat, decided to visit. I had actually gone in for some tomato food!Was in veg growing heaven! The guy pottering around was really helpful, even if he shake his head at my dead aubergine. Was amazing to see someone come on, say I want that marrow and then take it away.

I have just tried to google it. It is in the Balti Belt , Birmingham. Off ladypool road (B12, sorry, half a post code!)So you can have a curry and pick up courgettes etc. I can't remember what it is called exactly, but is something like Sparkhill/Sparkbrook community garden centre.

Has these massive great big poly tunnels and a stock room that is two massive allotment type things. Have no idea who runs it, but is proper old school Bollywooders doing the growing. I thought it was amazing.
