  • Chilli Germination times

    Hi all
I was wondering if there is a definitive guide to chilli germination times anywhere online? I know some take longer than others, but wanted to get some idea of when to give up and remove from heated propagator?

    Currently I have in there:
Hungarian hotwax all germinated in just under 2 weeks.
Hungarian black no sign after nearly 4 weeks...??
white & chocolate Habanero only popped in last weekend..I know they are quite slow, but an idea of time would be really useful..4 weeks?
Hot fish about 2 weeks and no sign

I remember when germinating my bolivian rainbows they took 2 weeks, cayennes about a week and a half, and prairie fire about 3

I have some maui purple that I want to pop in too...

any ideas or links very welcome folks, thanks

difficult....i've found the hotter ones (chinese - naga's, fatalli etc) take a lot longer than the less hot (annum - jalepeno)....

      chile pepper starting seeds
Impossible is not a fact its an opinion...
Impossible is not a decleration its a dare...
      Impossible is potential......

My chocolate habs are being super slow as well. re-the super hots such as the jolokias, I was given two lots of seeds, one expensive and one was from the cornish chilli company and a little cheaper. Theres been a marked difference in the germination times, with the cornish variety coming up within about two weeks, half the time of the other lot. I used the saltpeter germination solution you can get from the chilli pepper company, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I've no luck with the Hungarian Blacks either. Sowed in two batches: 6 in Jan, with one germinating, almost dying, but miraculously still going with two miniscule leaves. 4 in late Feb, still no germination...

As far as I can tell it's a case of the hotter they are the longer they take. I had Jolokias take 2-4 weeks with germination powder.

Although some of the non-annuums do seem to take longer to germinate, I've found a marked difference in freshness of seed - it appears much faster to germinate all types of 'fresh' chilli seed.

pretty much yea, you need to make sure you keep them warm the hole time aswell, ive had great sucess with an airing cupboard in some cases im managed to get seeds to germinate in half the time they should

i had a bhut jolokia germinate yesterday after about 7 weeks in the soil! it is hard to say but harder to grow varieties like habaneros, naga etc take much longer than the like of cayenne or jalapeno that usually pop up after a week or so.

                    Thanks for reminding me chilliking.
                    Here's an update:
None of the white habanero ever germinated after 8 weeks gave up on them - figured they were wasting electricity and space. Chocolate got one out of 3 seeds (I only wanted one) in roughly 4 weeks, and its gone like a rocket in the last bout of summer weather.
Hot fish got 2 after 4 weeks, but they are much smaller although healthy.
I am not planting anymore chillis this year.
The bolivian Rainbow have just started to flower - wow purple flowers!!
