  • Chickens are destroying my hard work!

Ok, so I've googled and it seems there is very little I can do. Am hoping that one of you guys might have a great idea.

Chickens from the plot next to mine are destroying everything. They've even started eating my potato tops and they're supposed to give them belly ache!

I really don't want to have to look at an 8' fence as that's going to cost serious money. They've apparently had their wings clipped already. I could look at building covers for everything, but again it wouldn't be cheap and how the hell would I protect my climbing beans?

My plot isn't a council one so I can't complain to them and I don't want to kick up too much fuss with the guy who looks after our allotments as I'm already the outsider trying to fit in.

    Help!

If everything's going to get eaten, there's not much point me planting!

Unfortunately you have no option but to mention it to the chicken owner. You pay your rent & are entitled to grow crops not chicken feed.

Absolutely agree with BM, if you want a cheaper option for protection, try the local scaffold company as they may have some old debris netting you can have foc.

I would say something, after all he wouldnt like it done to his crops if he grew veg. I think any responsible pet owner would sort this out promptly x

Have the got one wing clipped or two? Often people clip both wings which is a mistake. If one wing is clipped it throws them off balance and they do regrow. When were they last clipped?
When they get over the fence they perch on the top and then fly down so you could ask the owners to run some floppy fence/netting or strings across the top of the fence to stop them getting a perch.
I'd be worried about them getting free, I'm surprised they haven't been attacked if they are allowed to roam. A responsible owner would sort this out . You need to be brave and have a chat.
