  • Carrots and beetroot

    Hi,
I sowed some carrots and beetroot in my trough, the dog, we had, dug the trough up and i assumed the seeds would be ruined so i turned the compost and planted some strawberry plants. A few weeks later i started getting lots of little shoots and i found out they were the carrots and beetroot so i left them. Trouble is i can't remember when it was i sowed them, I don't know how deep into the trough they are (the trough is 1ft deep) so how will i know when to harvest them?

Have you still got strawberries in there as well Jason? It's going to be a bit of a crush if you have.

How does one ever know when to harvest a root veg? You look at the amount of growth that the leaves have made and when they look good and big, scrape back some soil from the top of the root and see what that looks like - and if it looks big enough, pull it up.
Since you hadn't thought you were growing these, they are a bonus, so don't worry about how deep they are, if they want to grow they will! If they're in the way of your strawberry plants though, you might want to pull the seedlings out now before they get too large.
