  • Carrots advice

As stated in a previous post I had a minor catastrophe when a wall came down on my carrots.

Rubble removed Carrots started to stand again so alls well, or is it?

The carrot stems have recently developed seed heads I assume this means they have bolted if so I take it the trauma has put them into bolt mode?

If so is it best just waiting and collecting the seeds for next year and if so what are the tell tale signs that the seeds are ready?

    Thank you Mr Jolly

Yes, if the carrots has thrown up a flower then you won't have anything to harvest - all the energy from the swollen root will have been transported up to the flower head.

Not sure about saving carrot seed - not something I've done yet. I'm sure someone in the know will be along with an answer shortly.

If your carrots were an F1 variety, not worth the hassle as you will not know what you are going to get. Also, if that strain goes to seed very easily is it worth trying to get seed from it just to have the same thing happen again? Carrot seed is relatively inexpensive and my advice would be just to spend a couple of quid on seed from a reliable company.

If you are looking for an early kitchen carrot, early nantes 2 is as easy to grow as any, and is a really nice sweet carrot.

I like Nantes, but I also like Amsterdam Forcing (I think that's what they're called).

I would also recommend early nantes2, seem to always produce good carrots and nice tasting.
